HHC24 Santa on the Rug & Rug Tutorial

I posted this to SCS late on Tuesday (3/31) just in time to complete my March requirements for the 2009 Christmas Card Challenge. Shew, that was close! Since I already had posts planned for Tuesday and Wednesday, I decided to save it to show you until today.

For High Hopes Challenge #24 (creative borders), I used my distressing tool on the main image layer, the Riding Hood Red layer, and around the white edges of the “rug”. The fringe on the rug probably counts too!

The wood floor was an image that was hand drawn by me and turned into a digital stamp. I simply add a little Prismacolor pencils shadows and its done.

I got the idea for the rug from Mel here. I was too lazy to do the sewing Mel did so my fringe is paper. I've promised many of you that I'd be better about posting more details on how I do things so I thought I'd better say more about this rug. I had already completed the card above so I made another rug to show you what I did. Bear with me here as some of my pics are lousy! I'll get better. Here we go:

RUG TUTORIAL

Cut a rectangle of DP to roughly the size you'd like your rug to be (you can see my rug is sitting on a piece of cardstock that I've printed my floor digi on).

Next, you know I like perspective, so trim the left and right sides to roughly match the angle of the floor boards.
Trim all 4 sides with kind of a curved shape....just more interesting to me.
For the fringe, attach some scaps of cardstock on to the left and right edges. Here's a back view:
Here's a lousy pic of the same thing from the front. You get the idea!
Trim the top and bottom of the cardstock to match the top and bottom of the DP. Trim the left and right sides to match the curves of the DP. This fringe is a little too short. Better to go too long as you can always cut more off if you need to.
Take your paper snips and cut lots of little slits into the fringe area. I just made these cuts really quickly and didn't worry too much about how even they were.
Use your fingers to shape the fringe where you want it to go. I found that I liked if I just folded the fringe in half towards the front of the rug. Then I worked some pieces backwards. I also folded some sideways to leave gaps. When attaching the rug to the floor, I did not glue the fringe down.
OK, how'd I do on that explanation?

Stamps: High Hopes Jolly Old St. Nick, High Hopes Happy Hollidays (just the “HO”)
Paper: Bazzill, Riding Hood Red, Creamy Caramel, Basic Grey Wassail
Ink: River Rock (shading on the rug)
Accessories: Copics, Prismacolor pencils and Goo Gone, Stamp-a-majig, distressing tool

Enjoy!

Michelle, that was a great tutorial. I love how your card turned out. The rug looks so realistic! You really are an artist. One question (thanks again for answering all my questions on your scene piecing technique) how did you turn your floor boards into a digital image to be printed again? I do quite a few of indoor scenes, and I end up drawing the floor again and again. Thanks again! Terri

I think this card is just genius! It's gorgeous. I'd love to case it but I would never do it justice. Happy Friday! Hugs!
