TECC24 Building a Sandcastle

I am loving Taylor's sketches. I always seem to end up with something I like if I start with Taylor's sketch! Here's this week's Taylored Expressions Cupcake Challenge sketch # TECC24.

I like using traditional card sketches with a scene. As I can paint these scenes as well, mixing the sketch with the scene makes the stamping project more interesting and differentiates it from my flat painting projects.

The sandcastle was a WRAK from Stamping In Kansas and LMcAree (Thanks girls!)

I used the Brayered Sky Technique to make the sky, beach, and water. I then BRAVELY cut the center out (it was scary but it was the best way to ensure the beach and ocean lined up and had the right color/shading). I added Real Red paper behind that center piece to bring that layer up.

I paper pieced the girls dress (Real Red paper with polka dots from Polka Dots & Paisley) and straw hat (see below). I also cut out and pieced the girl and palm trees onto the scene to keep the colors very bright (when I emboss them, it dulls the color a bit and I didn't want that for my beach scene). The water is glistening in the sun (see more below).

I cut some circles out with my Cricut and sponged River Rock onto the center circle to match the beach. The red circle was cut out from the red mat in the center of the card (I'm so cheap!). The sandcastle was colored with Prismacolor pencils. I cut the top portion of the sandcastle off and moved it down a bit (so only the flag was showing) because it was too tall for the circles.

Here's a closeup of the water and straw hat. I added some small glitter pen lines to the water and then smeared them side to side with my finger. The water now "glistens" in the "sun". I've wanted to make a faux staw hat for this lovely lady since I bought her and I think I finally got it. I colored her hat yellow with Prismacolor pencils and blended with baby oil. I then masked off the flowers and lightly stamped the texture stamp from Oh So Lovely on the hat in Close to Cocoa. Voila, a straw hat!

Stamps: The Stampin Place Palm Tree, Gina K. Just Be-Claws (sand castle), MFT Can Ya Dig It?, Hanna Stamps Things Hanna Would Say, Oh So Lovely (texture on hat), Polka Dots & Paisley (dots on dress), Rubber Stampede Mirror Image Stamp (to have a mirror image palm tree)
Paper: Real Red
Ink: Cool Caribbean, Tempting Turquoise, Taken with Teal, River Rock, Close to Cocoa
Accessories: Copics, Primsacolor Pencils, Glitter Pen, White Gel Pen, Ribbon from Mike's

Enjoy!
